The little round bellied man was middle aged and had worked for the large accounting
firm of Bristol & Jacoby for well over thirty years. Charlie hated the job, but he was not
yet old enough to retire.
Bristol & Jacoby were an old establishment. They had been located in San Francisco
for all of sixty years. The two skinny, elderly gentlemen who had started the firm were
now long deceased. But the middle-aged sons of both families had carried on the
business together after their fathers’ retirements and had done a very able job. Within
the last five years they had refurbished the rusted building both inside and out, even
modernizing the exterior with shaded glass and colored aluminum siding.
As the business flourished their services to the community were outstanding. They
did the accounting for large corporations. Their clientel included private industry and
government contracts. They handled foreign accounts as well as domestics. They did
the bookkeeping for certain wealthy lawyers, doctors, bankers, and insurance
companies. They also provided income tax services.
The huge firm had forty certified accountants on their staff. This included one Charles
Lyman Briggs, a brilliant accountant, who had at certain times been called upon to do
cost accounting for some small businesses.
But Charlie was not a company-man. He was very bored with the job and wanted out.
The only thing wrong with that was....READ ON IN MY NEW BOOK, "South, Through

The year is 1938. Kerney’s Gym is located in a rough section on a busy thoroughfare
in Philadelphia. The one-hundred-fifty foot square building has no windows facing the
wide street. The walls are of red brick and remind you of a dilapidated Civil War
prison, or one of those shaky whorehouse establishments on the south side of town.
But there is a small red neon sign above the wooden paneled door that says: “GYM”.
“Say, kid, you look pretty good in there, sparring around with the Juke!” Al Kerney, the
promoter said.
“How would you like to make a few easy bucks?”
“Me? How is that?” I turned my head away from the old fellow I was sparring with
toward the middle-aged promoter, who was sitting on a collapsible canvas chair just
outside of the roped-off boxing ring.
The man of middle height, with broad shoulders and a pugnacious face, stood up and
came over closer to me.
“My name is Al Kerney. I’m the promoter here. And I need someone to fill in tonight in
the preliminaries,” he said further. “One of my boys got sick and had to go to the
hospital.”
I was leaning on the ropes from a corner, looking down at him.
“Are you asking me to take his place?”

Foreword
Halfway down the beautiful coast of California, next to the
vast Pacific Ocean, lies a place of enchantment:
Monterey - a city of mystique, fascination and delight.
Most often the fog rolls in, covering the brightness of what
the sunshine brings, and blanketing the land in a dull gray
mist. It gives one a sense of excitement, mystery and
adventure not found anywhere else in the world.
Monterey is surrounded by other interesting sights: The
Seventeen Mile Drive with it's great scenic beauty, and
where we in our childhood, discovered the tide pools
searching for tiny crabs, starfish and other sea anemones.
There is also Pacific Grove with it's small number of ancient
gnarled trees, Del Monte our old camping ground, and
Seaside which had a mile long forage of sand hills that we
romped on. And there is beautiful Carmel, a city with the
most interesting shops and an exquisite ocean view.
Monterey holds.............
